It’s been wave after wave of content coming from Netflix this year, but it’s plain to see that the streamer has focused much of its effort on the sci-fi genre. The first big sci-fi hit of 2026 actually started in 2025, with the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. After releasing its first batch of episodes near the end of last year, Stranger Things wrapped up with a divisive Season 5 finale on New Year’s Day. Netflix kept the sci-fi momentum going with the premiere of War Machine, which shattered records on its way to becoming one of the top 10 most-watched Netflix movies in history. The latest sci-fi project to come from the biggest streaming service in the world is The Boroughs, but despite mostly positive reviews, the series was canceled after only one season.
Netflix has ditched the sci-fi genre for its latest hit, Voicemails for Isabelle, which has now been streaming on the platform for 10 days. After a bit of a slow start on streaming, the heartfelt romantic comedy really picked up steam during its second weekend on the platform, and it’s now the most-watched movie in the world on streaming. Written and directed by Leah McKendrick, who also has a small role in the film as Breeda, Voicemails for Isabelle stars Zoey Deutch as Jill and Nick Robinson as Wes. The film follows a woman who loses her sister, which prompts her to begin calling her and leaving her voicemails after her death. What she doesn’t realize is that a new man now has her sister’s old phone number, and he’s getting these messages she thinks are being sent into the void.
