The nominations for the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards have been revealed.

Anora and I Saw the TV Glow lead with six nods each. On the TV side, Shogun dominates with five noms, followed by Baby Reindeer and English Teacher with four each.

Both Anora and I Saw the TV Glow are up for the top prize of best feature, where they’ll face off against three-time nominee Sing Sing (also up for best lead performance for Colman Domingo and supporting performance for Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin) and double nominees Nickel Boys (also up for best cinematography for Jomo Fray) and The Substance (also up for best lead performance for star Demi Moore).

Anora and I Saw the TV Glow are also up for best director (Sean Baker for Anora and Jane Schoenbrun for I Saw the TV Glow), lead performance (Mikey Madison for Anora and Justice Smith for I Saw the TV Glow), supporting performance (two nods for Anora, for Yura Borisov and Karren Karagulian, with I Saw the TV Glow‘s Brigette Lundy-Paine also scoring a nod) and the Producers Award. I Saw the TV Glow also earned a nod for best screenplay.

Didi is up for four awards, while Donald Trump origin movie The Apprentice and Janet Planet were nominated for three awards apiece.

Azazel Jacobs’ His Three Daughters will receive the Robert Altman Award, given to a film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast.

The 40th annual Spirit Awards, presented by Film Independent will take place on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025, with Aidy Bryant returning as host. The in-person show on the beach in Santa Monica will stream on the IMDb and Film Independent YouTube channels and other social platforms.

“Since we held our first ceremony in 1985 at a restaurant on La Cienega to last year’s show when viewers around the world joined us at the Santa Monica Beach to celebrate the work of so many artists, Film Independent has continued to support independent filmmakers and enable them to achieve their vision at every stage of their career,” Film Independent president Josh Welsh said Wednesday morning, looking back at the history of the awards. “As with the legendary artists from that inaugural event, and the countless others we’ve had the privilege to work with since, we’re thrilled to be honoring this group of creatives as they continue this proud legacy.”

At the first ceremony of what was then called the FINDIE (Friends of Independents) Awards, Martin Scorsese and Joel Coen shared the best director prize. The Spirit Awards began recognizing TV in 2021 and switched to gender-neutral acting categories in 2022.
